So you shouldn't watch iot expecting to see a whole lot of gung-ho bollocks. It's a very deep film, and for those that have the mental capacity to understand it, it's a truly great film.
I myself never got the hang of it, but I've heard other people describe it, and read Francis Ford Coppola's explanation for it. It's intending to take a very metaphorical and figurative view on war in general. That's where somebodies mental capacity and general knowledge of the world around them comes into play.
It's just one of those films that has to be understood on multiple levels....And only the Director can really fully understand it. Most Art House films fit that description anyways.

You have basically summed the whole film up, well done.
the film doesnt suck, as some of you have put it, its just you may think it sucks because a) there isnt a lot of charlie killing and fighting, or b) as tripper says, you dont understand the film.
It is a classic and always will be.
It has been made on a much deeper level than the war itself, and you could think of it as modern art, and very ahead of its time back in the 70s.
If you watch the redux version you get a better understanding of the characters.
