If you have the patiance and/or will you could always format it and change the file system from FAT32 to NTFS. Unless it's already using the NTFS file system :/

Also make sure that you have at least 700 megs free on your primary partition (C:\ where windows is installed) and that you don't have a lot of crap in the background taking up a lot of resources.

You should also disable the file & printing sharing if you wish to secure your comp but that's pretty irrrlevant to your current situation.

There also a number of ways to "speed up" your internet but i can't remember them although you should be able to find info on that just by using google.
