Having a gun DOES NOT make you safer.

To (roughly) quote the movie "bowling for columbine":

"If more guns made it safer, than America would be the safest country in the world, and it is not."

Take LA for example, there are probably billions of guns in that city, and the crime rate is through the roof. So, PsychoMerc, you don't really have a point there, because outlaws are still robbing stores, whether there's a gun in the store or not.

And having a gun in your house in fact makes you less safe than not having one, as someone could pick up your gun and shot you with it, not to mention the risk of a child thinking the gun is a toy and accidently shooting someone with it. And don't just spit back, "well, just tell the kid to leave the gun alone" because, come on, lets face it, most kids will just want to play with it more, no matter what you tell them, because that's how kids are, curious, and when they get a chance, they will go looking for that gun.

My opinion, some degree of gun control is needed. For example, bolt-action rifles for hunting and target shooting are one thing, but M16's and AK47's are another, and should be illegal. Assault rifles and other fully automatic weapons have no real use that can't be just as well filled by a bolt-action or semi-auto rifle, and thus should be illegal.
