This is a bit of a no-debate as there is no way to compare a continent with a single nation.

It's all very well when you have even team numbers (Ryder Cup, ahem) but when you compare unequal entities like military forces you start entering a logistical, statistical and, to be frank utterly pointless nightmare of a debate. Basically, most "facts" that people will come up with here (if they aren't numbers based) will be purely guesses.

The US military (combined) is the most powerful fighting force on the planet, but largely due to the fact that they have the most money to spend on it. But then take 10 of the finest and well equiped fighters in the world and tell them to go fight 500 poorly equiped, but fierce fighters and I know who I'd put my money on.

Now, comparing Navy Seals and SAS, or US Marines and British Royal Marines would be more interesting and a bit more balanced.

It'd pretty scary stuff putting a group of those men in a small building together (especially the special forces) and telling them the other lot called them bad names.
