I haven't played 3 yet, but was big into the original and WC2. My strategy when playing against other people was to build barracks ASAP and start pumping out footmen. Nothing worse than being attacked within the first 5 mins of the game.

Then, crank out the peons. Do they even HAVE peons in the new one?
