I'm a little confused by your question.
For one, get Kazza Lite++ if you don't have it already. Best one out there.
Ok, cable usually has a 1.5mb/256kb connection. Some ISP's offer higher bandwidth for more money, but it's usually an increase in your upload bandwidth. But since it is cable, you actually get much more download bandwidth, especially if you are not in a crowded area. I myself can get about 400+ KB (that's Kilobyte not kilobit) download from fast servers.
Now, I don't understand why you are saying 300KB is unheard of or would be screwing up your download. There are many servers out there on fast connections that use Kazza Lite. As far as your songs sounded crappy, well make sure you are not having sound driver issues, and try playing the song in a different app then what you are using now.
Also, if you are downloading a 5 MB file wih 300KB/s speeds, it should take about 2 minutes. So if it happens to download instantly, then something is wrong with your Kazza settings. Just uninstall it and install the new ++ version, and see what happens.
