That first mission is the first mission in the full game aswell, and yes, there is a lot of system jumping.
Both with police jumplanes and jumpholes (hidden in various places throughout the galaxy).
Here's a pic of a federal cruiser of some sort (pretty early in the game, and my ship was beaten up as hell). Linking it b/c of its size:
