It isn't being praised because it has an innovative (or even really interesting)
storyline. Part of the reason everyone gave it a good rating is that the movie
itself (cinematography) is just so well done and excellently paced that you
never have the chance to get bored. The blood you refer to was a tribute to
animes: just check out some movies like Akira, Ninja Scrolls and you will get
the picture.
