Yeah, there's a tradeoff in quality when dealing with transparency sometimes.
Straight lines on the edge of the transparency usually look fine...odd edges like the blood in your sig usually don't unless you use a matte. A matte is basically a few pixels of colour which outline the edges involved in the transparency. They keep the anti-aliased look of the edges when the colours are reduced to 256.
I would've used a matte in your image, but where you're using the sig on different coloured forums, it would show up. For example, if you were using the image on a white background only, I would've used a white matte. That white matte, however, would be visible on a black background...making the sig look putrid.
