I have a geforce 3 and have been getting the common screen tearing problem. I enabled vsync but did not like the loss of frames per second.

Could manually setting the refresh rate for my monitor help the problem? Right now it is set at optimal, and I am not really sure what that means. I have a Dell 19" Trinitron. I think it is a sony product with a dell badge. How can I tell what the max refresh rate of my monitor is and should I change it to that rate?
