I might be able to help with this one..about a year ago i was having the same problem. This is what you need to do.

1). Check if your motherboard has onboard audio (sound).

2). If it doesn't, then I can't help you anymore. If it does, continue to step 3.

3). Ok, you have onboard audio on your motherboard, check now if you have a seperate audio card. If you do, check if it is plugged into the motherboard, or if you are using the motherboard audio and not the soundcard.

4). If you are using the motherboard audio, go into the BIOS and turn the audio off, and plug in the sound card. MAKE SURE MOTHERBOARD AUDIO IS OFF!

5). Thats it, that was the problem for me. There was a conflict between the motherboard audio and something else I had in my system. Sorry if this doesnt help rock:
