I find that strange as well,
if you want to learn about Islam wouldn't you go to Saudi Arabia?
1. its the birthplace of Mohammed and the location of Islam's holy cities
2. its more civilized than Afghanistan (ie. they have hotels and running water)
3. no "proven" connections to terrorism (even though I believe that place is the real source)
