Full autos have been illegal since the 1930's. As for a .50 cal I'm not sure what the law is - I have seen some single shots advertised. In principle I have no problem with somebody owning one. Alot of people enjoy target shooting as a sport. I have no desire to own a .50 cal but I don't see the point in NASCAR either. To each his own. I would however love to own a Thompson (like I said full auto is illegal but you can still buy a semi-auto). That's my dream gun. Would I ever even fire it? Maybe. Once. But for the rest of eternity it would hang on my wall as a collector's item and conversation piece. Like I said, to each his own.
BTW - when I first joined the NRA I didn't own a single gun. It was just the thought that a US Senator wanted to crap on the Constitution that got me riled up. Now I own a German Luger that my Dad gave me. He had owned it since 1952. He wanted to make sure I got it instead of my sister's kid, incase he died suddenly. I also got a .30-'06 rifle when my Uncle died. Never have bought any ammo for it.
