In regards to the question at issue:

Day of Defeat gives Medal of Honor a run for its money if what you want is a more realism-based, objective-orientated, team-centric multiplayer game set in a World War II environment. And this assumes graphics are not an issue for you.

Medal of Honor, on the other hand, is more action-orientated, does less to promote team-based play, and is less objective-focused. It also has graphics that will knock your socks off.

So again, it depends on what you are looking for.

Day of Defeat is a total conversion of Half-Life, in much the same way Counterstrike and Team Fortress Classic are. That being the case, the graphics are dated by today's standards. That doesn't mean it looks bad; not by any means. DoD's Normandy level looks nice enough, and there are a few wrecked town and village levels that look great. None, however, hold a candle to MoH when it comes to pure eye-candy.

Day of Defeat uses a more realistic combat system and damage more accurately reflects real life. There are no health packs. A short burst from an automatic weapon can kill you fast. And so on.

Medal of Honor, meanwhile, is less realistic and more arcade-like in its combat system. It makes for a faster pace and a quicker game; less thoughtful, less planning, more crazed charges. (No respawns on some maps help counter that, however)

Day of Defeat does more to promote team gaming in several ways. One, of course, is that the whole point is team combat. It's all objective-based scenarios, and the game utilizes a brilliant respawn system that always respawns the dead in groups.

Medal of Honor does less to promote team-based gameplay. Hell, most of its maps are straight deathmatch maps. The game tracks very little as far as the team goes, focusing on kills instead. Several threads here have discussed this.

All in all, Day of Defeat is a very, very worthy game that Medal of Honor fans craving realism should, at the very least, check out. I like Medal of Honor's look and feel and mechanics a lot more, but I adore DoD's team-based play and great objective-orientated boards.

But remember, Day of Defeat is not yet a commercial product; it was made by the mod community. Medal of Honor may yet get its own version. (We can hope)
