The constitutional right to bear arms allows us to keep firearms for self defense, raising a militia if needed, hunting and for sport. I dont think the founding fathers could possible fathom the destructive firepower we have today, so i would think they would be aghast if they saw citizens keeping assault rifles just for the mere sake of having them. As for the overthrow of corrupt governments i agree to an extent. if we were to be invaded by a neighboring country, the fact that many of the civilians are armed would make it much more difficult for them to supress us. most of what our Continental Army consisted of were farmers and laborers who had a rifle. Besides, if any president or politician tried to take control, the people wouldnt stand for it and i dont think the army and police would either.
