I would say that we "lost the peace", that is we managed to piss off more people than we killed enemies. Mostly piss-poor handling from the top levels of government down to top level military command.

Thats right, we kicked the shit out of the NVA, VietCong and Vietminh during Tet and whenever they openly engaged our troops in combat. Also, our LRRPs, SOGs and tribal allies won nearly every engagement they were in. We were very successful but the fact that the military dicked around for a decade led to all the protests and our withdrawl from Vietnam.
