I think you mean setting the brightness in game, correct. Click on Start, click Run, and type dxdiag. Let the program run and on the first page at the bottom it shows your Direct X version. What is the compleat version number? Now click on the Display tab. What is your video card and driver?
Sounds like a reinstall to me.
