 Actually, they did try to bomb the beaches. Problem was, bombers in those days weren't as precise as bombers now. Plus, the weather was really bad for doing a bombing run that day and the bombs ended up missing the beach (and the bunkers) by a couple miles.
 The navy had more luck in hitting the beach. But, as Rickets said, they didn't do much good because the bunkers were too thick.
