HISTORY
1067 – The ‘Invicta’ legend of Kent.

In his chronicle written in the XIIIth century, Thomas Sprot, a monk of St. Augustine’s Abbey, Canterbury, Kent, describes how the men of his county, under Archbishop Stigand and Abbot Egelsin, gathered near Swanscombe soon after William of Normandy had been crowned as king. Each with a green bough held aloft in the left hand and a sword in their right hand they surrounded the Normans who were on their way to Dover. Dropping the boughs and raising their swords, they promised William their allegiance provided he would grant them their ancient laws and privileges. If he refused, then it would be war, and that most deadly. William acceded to their demands and thus the people of Kent gained their proud motto ‘Invicta’ – Unconquered.
