He needs to find a mechanic he trusts and have all the lines in the car flushed. He also needs to have a pressure check to see if there is any oil leaking, which blue smoke almost guarantees there is. If the pressure in the fuel injection lines is intermittent, or there is a leak elsewhere, that could account for the occasional starting.
Before you take it to a mechanic, though, take the car to Auto Zone. They will check the battery and alternator for you for free, and will usually also be able to tell you exactly what is wrong with your vehicle. If it's simple, they will even help you with it for free occasionally. Auto Zone rocks.
