Depending on how much confidence you have in your shot, (mine is above average, but no where close to expert) depends on what weapon you would use.
As for myself, like I said, i'm not the best, but I can be a formiable sniper, I would use the Mauser for trying to pickoff targets at a distance. It's more accurate, and the loading time prevents you from shooting off more than one round at a time, therefore you have better control.
As for closer combat, the Gerand's rapid fire, and mid-accuracy of a rifle, can probably outgun a Mauser when at a shorter range.
