All these points refer to SP, and this point in particular means what it says: 'the player' is you.

So, no, you can't pick up grenades and throw them back.

In fact, you'll notice that grenades in SP take longer to explode than the ones in MP.

It would be impossible to pick up a grenade in MP and throw it back without dying, even if it could be done. You don't have enough time.
