Even if we were a bunch of Communists, we'd still run out of oil without the discovery of a viable alternative energy source. Same goes for all the other natural resources.

I'm assuming that you feel that this would not be the case because communism calls for equal distribution of resources, thereby eliminating mass consumption. But let's keep this in mind: with Communism, everyone will suddenly be given gasoline, even people who didn't have it prior. More people will have access to running water, etc etc.
