The SR-71 and Stealth experiments. Even after the gulf war and the official disclosure of stealth aircraft the sight of them still made people think they were seeing ufo's.
I saw a stealth fighter coming in for a landing at Warner Robins AFB, and let me tell you if I didn't know what it was I would have thought I just saw a UFO. They are triangle shaped, totally black, and do not give off any noise whatsoever while cruising. It was really creepy.

also in the 70s acid was legal for almost a year... that can cause sightings.
