A true horror movie to me is one that disturbs, shocks and builds tension in an audience. It doesn't always go for the cheap scare or sting. Sure, it can have those moments, but it shouldn't rely on them.
The Exorcist is an example of a pure horror movie in my books. It's shocking, vulgar, gross, tense, and (somewhat) believeable.
Others that would make my list are:
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Original)
- The Thing
- I Spit On Your Grave
- A Nightmare on Elm Street
- Suspiria
- Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot, so fuck off.
Slasher films like Friday the 13th and Halloween (ok, maybe the first Halloween...) aren't pure horror movies, really. They're just dumb fun and a great way for your date to cuddle into your shoulder.
