Here's the scoop. After shopping around pretty hard, I've found there are three types of server hosts:
1. Those that put the number of customers they serve above the game's performance. You can rent a server from them, but you will not have a dedicated box and you will not have good performance. This is really, really bad for a big server, but they tend to be less expensive. A good opiton for someone looking to host 8 to 16 players.
2. Those that host web sites / do co-location and want to get into the "game server" market. You saw an example of my exchange with one of these guys in an earlier post. 'Nuff said.
3. Those that won't host a game unless they can deliver the performance. These guys are typically more expensive, offer good service and know gaming. They're the "pros". I am currently working something out with one of these types of hosts right now and I am supposed to be able to be up and runing in about two weeks.
