I had a simular problem when i got my pc only this was with a wired connection. I went through so many tutorials to try and get this to work, I managed to get it to work but the connection just randomly cut off on my pc (upstairs) - took like a days worth of tweeking to set it backup. - i eventually decided to get a router (which is pretty much plug and play on XP).
