not alot, depending on what your pic looks like. if you're printer a dark picture, yes alot would be sued, but for mine, there are more whiter areas on my pciture and less ink was used. I bought I new cartridge last night, and the ink bar on my printer never went down, but turning it to grayscale and adjusting the contrast to +5 or +10 will reduce the amount of ink used on some areas of the picture. the hihgher the contrast = the more whiter the pic = less ink would be used. 
 
EDIT: just took another look at the ink bar, and it turns out that just over half of the ink was used.  ed:
