Actually, guns are used far more for defense than to commit a crime. Therefore, gun ownership raises public safety.
However, to me, that point is irrelevant. I believe that men are "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights". The Constitution has a Bill of Rights that protects those freedoms. We should guard each plank of the Bill of Rights like a starving dog guards a ten pound steak.
