I have a few close friends who were born and live abroad, most of them being exchange students, and all of them say that America is highly regarded abroad. A lot of them say that when we hear or see bad things being said about America, it is typically in regards to the government.
And yes, the stereotype that Americans are fat, lazy and ignorant of the world still persists (not that it isn't unfounded), but still being "American" is the new pop culture in Europe. Especially in Germany and Austria.
Anyway, the only people running around screaming "I hate America" or "Everyone hates America" actually live in America (or Canada, obviously).
