i checked their forums and this is the latest:

"Actually DDoS attacks cannot be prevented, since GS has no control over the school aged boys that do the attacking. However, sometimes you can divert an attack shortly after it begins using a variety of different strategies. The problem this time is that the attack was far too big for any normal method to handle. We're talking upwards of 2 gbps."
