1. The dog lived.

2. The dog was sedated.

3. The dog was about to be put to sleep.

4. it is a biology class.

5. What is so wrong about it ? we watch ER type shows with live surgery action all the time... I really see no problem, the teacher is being proactive and actaully teaching the kids.
