You're probably right. Although I'm not sure if the wording was bad or the interpretation was off. When I re-read it, it sounds more like an observation of a fact than a spiteful desire that was fulfilled. I guess it depends on if you're a glass half empty or half full kinda guy. Human nature pretty much is that you see what you want to see, you hear what you want to hear.
