If your running win2k or winXP you do not need a reformat. Do I recommend reformatting and starting from fresh like Joe and Butcher suggested with the second hard drive

HELL YA.

If your on a budget and cant afford the new mombo, cpu, ram and power supply along with an additional HD. Make sure you back everything up and start from fresh with your new parts.

You still can just upgrade the OS for now, but I personally recommend a fresh install in these conditions.

Some things to remember when looking for that new mombo

If you have your original Power supply, then any new ( worth purchasing )
Motherboard / CPU will need a new power supply. Should be 350Ws or over and if it cost under $30, it's not worth it. I would recommend Antec power supplies

What do I get Intel, AMD. I like Intel, but I do more then play games. For an all around good CPU. That will give you the most bang for the buck. I would go with AMD and get something along the lines of an 2000XP or above.

If you buy an Intel P4 then you need rambus ram, Must be installed in pairs

The AMD uses DDR pc2100 ram and does not need to be in pairs

My only AMD gripe is "don't get anything with a via chipset" I have had problems with them in the past. could be fixed now but I don't have much experience with them

Good luck with your upgrade.
