1) Buy more memory. I didn't read how much you have, but you should have at least 128MB, recommended 256MB.

2) Increase your virtual memory.

3) Use a program that searches for bad shortcuts/links/files, etc. I recommend the Norton System Doctor in Systemworks.

4) Like Ball said, try to kill any apps that might be running in the background.
