We're no longer evolving, but rather following a dysgenic trend.
Because of our current system, those people who would normally die as a result of their genetic imperfections or accidents, live to pass on their inferior genes and further pollute the pool instead of making it better. The disease prone and the inferior intellects continuously mix with the more healthy/superior in the pool and I don't think we're benefiting.
Thankfully, research in genetics and medecine will neutralize this threat or at least alleviate the symptoms to some extent. Gattaca will be a reality sooner or later...
Minor edit: another thing you might want to keep in mind is that the more intelligent in society have less children, helping the inferior genes become superior in numbers, which makes them the more prevalent and available, which is bad. Of course, it goes without saying that if we help the weak survive, they become reintroduced in the pool and help keep things the same or worsen it for all of us. Eugenics isn't such a bad idea: look at what it did for the Ashkenazi jews...
