The s/n 55C1096 puts the date of manufacture early 1943 in a plant in the United States. The rifles were shipped over via the Lend-Lease act. this rifle was shipped to England and given to a soldier who may well have fired it at The Enemy. When the soldier was finished with the rifle, it was stored. The military stored firearms by covering them with grease. This was not a problem, as they had personnel who might grumble about removing grease from firearms but could be ordered to do it nonetheless.
