PDF compresses the shit out of files, so you'll lose resolution.

If you use Acrobat Distiller when creating a PDF from a PostScript or whatever, you can set it to any resolution you like, and you don't necessarily have to lose any resolution at all.
Ninty, I'd suggest checking the settings of the program you're using to create the PDFs...Anything around 300dpi should be a suitable resolution for printing....
