When Rose was at the Faith Healer's place, the healer mentioned different places in the world with strong magnetic energies. Must be it. *shrug*
Maybe The Hanso Foundation/Dharma Initiative knows about the properties on the island and now that they have delivered people there, they can study them and the effects the magnetism is having on people.
