Gas prices will have to stay very high for ethanol to replace it. (btw - I work for a company that produces ethanol - and I would like to thank the president of Iran for saying oil should be $100 per barrel - at that price we could afford to replace gas entirely).
The problem with ethanol is that you get about 30% less miles per gallon. This would be OK if it cost 30% less, but it doesn't. On the bright side, it's renewable, it burns cleaner, and gives a little more horsepower.
