At this point it is unclear whether he is still referring to his friendship with the girls, or the people who lived next door. We can assume he is talking about the girls because he writes:

He merely helped the people next door move out, and is not actually friends with them.

Usually you would put this this way if you're referring to helping people who are not your friends or relatives. It "feels good" to help those that you do not experience the suffering with.
