The protagonist is looking for a way to kill his younger brother in a way that looks accidental. Walking on the beach together, they encounter an unexploded bomb from the German attack on GB. Knowing full well what it is but telling his younger brother it is a bell, Frank gives him a piece of wood to hit it with. He runs to a safe distance and tells him to whack away. The rest is history. Great book.
