Not going to happen anytime soon. There is a limited amount of money to be made in this. Think of the thousands of jobs lost if we were to switch from oil/combustion based to a different form. It would be horrible for world economies, and corporations/governments won't let it happen.

Technology isn't the problem in finding new power sources. There are other factors at work.
