First off, it's not Dave Shula. That guy runs a restaurant. Second, last Monday there was a private meeting between Mal Moore (AD), Robert Witt (President), the Board of Trustees, Mike Shula, and Malcolm Portera (Chancellor of Alabama, Witt's boss). They practically decided then to fire Shula, but gave him a chance to prove he would make drastic changes to revitalize the program.

Mal Moore gave Shula a chance to present a list of steps he would take to get Bama back on track. He listed moving Connelly (OL) to the TEs, Ungerer (Speacial Teams) to the OL, and would give up the play-calling to Radar (OC). No coaches were proposed by Shula to be fired. If you know Alabama football well enough, it's more than painfully apparent that those aforementioned coaches needed to be fire. Moore was looking for those coaches to be fired, and was not pleased with his approach. He practically told Shula he was done then.

I agree they didn't carry out the firing very well, as Shula never had any definite word until after the team meeting @ 9:00 last night. They should have announced it last week.

Rumored candidates remain as the following:

Steve Spurrier (favorite)
Nick Saban
Rich Rodriguez
Bobby Petrino
Jim Grobe (Wake Forest)
Paul Johnson (Navy)
Butch Davis (even though he's a verbal for UNC, he did the same exact thing @ Bama several years ago before pulling out @ the last second)

Obviously the most desired coach on that list is Spurrier. The recruit potential with Spurrier at a school like Alabama, a school that consistently recruits around the top 10-15 every year, would be immense.
