To join you need to go to PLAYLIST and then push the RIGHT-ARROW to select from Ranked and Social Playlists.

NVM - that's not what you asked. I think you go to CAMPAIGN. And set up a game like you would online. Choose where to grab the people from and etc. I don't know if it chooses people to join you or how that works, if you can hot swap in. So far there are only three start place options I can see - based on where I've gotten in the game I guess.
