Good points, but animals are also capable of protecting others withing their group (younglings, babies, etc). Just because it tried to save one of it's own doesn't mean it necessarily did so out of compassion.

Same thing goes for the "traps" set. There are many species of animals that can do amazingly intelligent things, but they're still not humans. We're led to believe that these things have progressively lost their human characteristics through time.
