They are more human than you think.
Yes animals can protect their own kind just like people. But find me an example of an animal launching an assault with a small army on a fortified house in order to find one of their own kind. Then also explain how it was able to draw the butterfly on the window and the loving caress she gave the boss zombie.
The trap was moving a mannequin across the city of New York to another position that smith frequents a lot. This means they followed him and observed where he goes. They then found the mannequin he speaks to in the video store and brought it to that location. They set up the rope attached to a heavy object in order to capture him. This shows they are able to plan and then execute complex thoughts and ideas.
