Well, making it darker doesn't really change anything. I've played both "desertbase" and "operation midnight radio" (or whatever it's named) and the fact that it's dark doesn't change anything for snipers. I know what you mean with buildings blending in and out of the horizon if it's too foggy, it doesn't look good. However, for the objective version, getting sniped at spawn after 5 seconds sucks! Maybe you could make sure no-one spawns in high positions, like top of the lighthouse, and any other areas of the map overlooking the other island. To block snipers sight from certain parts of the maps is another idea, put up some walls/ruins high enough to block off snipers.
