Rude said it the best "both have there ups and downs ".
Unfortunately, WE ARE ALL AT THE MERCY OF OUR LOCAL ISP!!!!!
Yea read all you want about "cable is shared and DSL isnt", sorry but they are ALL shared, just depends on what point in the circuit its shared.. Its all a moot point because your provider is gonna oversell his bandwidth anyway!!!
GUYS, go read this article it will tell you all about the oversubscribing by your ISP: http://bandwidthplace.com/tech/
The ISPs only figure that on the average only so many clients will be on their systems and so thats how they sell it. Kinda like how the airlines overbook their planes. The ISP doesnt want to see their expensive hi-bandwidth connections idle so they oversell them so they get more use (and we get crappy connections most the time!).
If you have a great DSL or Cable connection and like to boast about one is better than the other, CONSIDER YOURSELF LUCKY!!!! and thats all, theres really not a big difference (now were talkin the basic service here, not the more expensive stuff). We have a number of cable providers here, some really suck, others are great.
What it all boils down to is CHECK YOUR LOCAL PROVIDER CAREFULLY before you subscribe. Go to a neighbor that has the service and find out how it runs, test it http://bandwidthplace.com/ just to be sure. Some companies offer a lower bandwidth than others (and dont tell you uless you read the fine print). Many companies have eqipment problems and wont bother to fix them until enough people complain.
I run a network for a company and have changed to 3 different ISPs so Ive had my share of dealing with these guys.
CHECK YOUR LOCAL PROVIDER CAREFULLY !!!!
