Default network speed question - 10-22-2002, 02:16 PM

i'm not sure if i've asked this before, but i am running an mohaa server off a dsl line (don't laugh now - on a pii 400mhz server), and i think my ping in gamespy is through the roof. when i look at gamespy on my network (my main pc) the ping is 1, but i know its alot higher than that. my question is this: is there something i can do to lower the ping for the outside world? i am going to be upgrading the server to a piii 800 in a couple of months, but is there anything i can to in the meantime to make the ping lower for outsiders to be able to connect? or am i screwed cos i'm on a dsl line and running on a pos machine?

i'd like to be able to keep the gaming server up and running, but if no one will be able to play on it then i'll just say screw it and take it down. if anyone wants to see the what the ping looks like, look for Feanor's Noldor Medal of Honor Team Deathmatch Server in GameSpy or use the in game ip address 216.227.90.165.

any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks all

I run a dedicated server (celeron 400mhz, 384MB Ram) on a 1MB SYMETRIC DSL line with pretty good pings for everybody (server max is 12 players tho). I've had no problems with the 400mhz (tho more ram never hurts!!) and I run Autokick and Teamspeak on the same machine. The key is that word SYMETRIC... your upload speed is very important!! Are you on an aDSL or sDSL connection? DSL connections ARE better for hosting than cable because the bandwidth is more consistent. But if you are on a 768/56kb aDSL the connection for hosting is still gonna be shit! If this sounds like your case, then the first thing to consider upping is your bandwidth!

If you have the up stream bandwidth, then you may consider asking your DSL provider to manually map a better routing for your connection to minimize hops to major backbone connections. A good DSL provider will do this for you, but some will just tell you too bad.

You might also have some hang ups with the routing in/out of your network. But in general your ping to the server will be lower inside your network than it is to the outside world. You gotta think, your internal network is probably either 10MB or 100MB! That's a lot more bandwidth than your DSL connection (and less hops too)!

hope that gave you some ideas...

I checked my ping on gamespy from outside my network and it actually wasn't as bad as i thought it would be . . . it was around 120 which i guess is still kinda high but not so ridiculous as i thought.

my next question would be this: do i set the challenge ping to a higher setting to allow people to connect.

i ask this because i see people trying to connect in the console and it looks like they get kicked cos their ping is high.

what's a standard challenge ping that most servers use?

thanks.

The problem is not with your computer. I just ran a few tracerts to your server and there are some router problems getting to your network.

Tracing route to dsl-216-227-90-165.telocity.com [216.227.90.165]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <10 ms 10 ms <10 ms 192.168.144.254

2 10 ms <10 ms <10 ms 192.168.145.2

3 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms 65.105.194.177

4 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms 65.105.194.225

5 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms ge5-0-0.MAR1.SanDiego-CA.us.xo.net [207.88.81.113]

6 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms p5-2-0-1.RAR1.LA-CA.us.xo.net [65.106.5.37]

7 10 ms 20 ms 10 ms ge1-0.edge1.lax-ca.us.xo.net [64.220.0.85]

8 10 ms 10 ms 20 ms p6-0.dist1.stv-ca.us.xo.com [206.111.14.214]

9 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms so-4-0-0.mp2.LosAngeles1.Level3.net [209.247.10.201]

10 110 ms 101 ms 100 ms so-0-1-0.mp1.Miami1.Level3.net [64.159.0.1]

11 110 ms 100 ms 110 ms gige9-0.hsipaccess1.Miami1.Level3.net [64.159.0.10]

12 100 ms 110 ms 100 ms 100m-core1.mia.tlct.net [63.209.144.6]

13 100 ms 100 ms 120 ms e13-1.amux1.mia.tlct.net [216.227.80.66]

14 120 ms 121 ms 120 ms dsl-216-227-90-166.telocity.com [216.227.90.166]

15 150 ms 130 ms 121 ms dsl-216-227-90-165.telocity.com [216.227.90.165]

Trace complete.

If you notice hop #10 has routing problems and it affects every hop thereafter. You can contact your ISP but I doubt that they will care about your game server, just tell em your internet is REAALLLLLLLLLL.... slow!

thanks!

i've spoken to my isp tech and he suggested changing some of my network settings which i've already done, and i'm trying to get a traceroute of my address. i see where the return at hop 10 goes through the roof, and i'm also working with a friend of mine to figure out a way to reroute myself. the tech also gave me a couple of new dns servers to try if none of this makes to much of a difference in speed.

i'll keep you posted. thanks for your help!
